About the WSGA

The WSGA was founded in 1927 by a group of golfers looking to promote the game through friendly competition.  Over the years the WSGA has grown to 400+ members, all belonging to the finest clubs in Westchester and Southern Connecticut.  The primary mission of our organization is to play in enjoyable events at fine venues.  But the WSGA is more than just that-it is about camaraderie; sharing a fine meal with your fellow competitors; making new friends; and having pride in our organization.

Our Members belong to eligible clubs.  For a list of Eligible Clubs click here.  Eligible clubs are expected to host a WSGA event every 10 years or so.  In recent years event venues have included Brae Burn, Quaker Ridge, Stanwich, Sleepy Hollow, Glen Arbor, Old Oaks and Whippoorwill to name a few.  The schedule for the next few years includes some of the best clubs in the area and includes some venues that are hosting the WSGA for the first time.  WSGA Schedule of Upcoming 2018 Events

The Officers and Board of Directors have the overall responsibility for the WSGA, but most of the work is done by the Committees and by the Metropolitan Golf Association.  The MGA provides all the administrative services and helps us run the tournaments.
Each year the WSGA has four tournaments and two matches.  Three of the tournaments are individual competitions and one is for two-man teams.  These events are held in the spring, summer and early fall.  The individual tournaments are conducted with competitions in each of six age categories with gross and net prizes for each age group.

The WSGA has sister senior golf organizations in Long Island and New Jersey.  Each year in the fall, we have a Triangular Match with those Organizations hosted on a rotating basis by each group.  12 of our members qualify for our Team based on points accumulated in our Tournaments.  Points are awarded to gross and net winners in each of six age categories. The Triangular Match in 1927, and has been played at some of the most challenging venues in the Tri State area.  Recent venues included Hudson National, Essex County, Glen Head and Somerset Hills. The WSGA also has a match with another Senior Organization, the Eastern Senior Golf Association.  Recent venues for this friendly completion were Old Oaks and Knollwood.

The WSGA also makes charitable contributions.  Each year the WSGA makes a donation to the MGA Foundation.  The MGA Foundation does important work in building a foundation for the future of golf by bringing the values and traditions of the game to a new generation of golfers through innovative programs aimed at underprivileged youth, junior golfers and the physically disabled.  This year’s contribution was $5,000.
The WSGA also funds a Scholarship in collaboration with the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund.  The Scholarship is named after Rudy Machacek, who was our Tournament Chairman for years.  Recent Scholarships were in the amount of $6,000 per year.
In 2014, the WSGA initiated its Distinguished Service Award.  The Award is based on contributions to the WSGA and to the game of golf.  The WSGA is proud to count among its members many who have contributed substantially to the game of golf.  The first recipients of this award were Gene Donovan in 2014, Grant Burnett in 2015, Joe Germano in 2016 and John Pinto in 2017. All of these recipients were very active in their clubs, the MGA, and our organization.
